  • (†) May be photosensitizing. Some essential oils contain certain chemical constituents that absorb energy from ultraviolet light. These oils are not harmful on their own, but if one were to be in bright sunlight or a tanning bed after applying them to the skin, a skin reaction might occur. The energy that the oil absorbs from the UV light must be released somewhere, and typically it manifests as a skin reaction. This reaction is called photosensitization and is similar to a sunburn. The class of oil constituents responsible for this are the coumarins. The oils where coumarins are found include celery, angelica, ammi visnaga, tarragon, parsley, tagetes, bergamot, lemon, mandarin, orange, and lemon verbena. Note that with proper dilution of oils, photosensitization is rare.
