Argan Oil Certified Organic Botanical Name: Argania spinosa Family: Sapotaceae Common Name: Moroccan Oil What is Argan Oil? Argan is a luxurious oil from Morocco that nourishes skin and hair. The oil is pressed from the almond-like nut of the Morocco’s native Argan tree. When used topically it soothes irritations, reduces and softens wrinkles, scars (particularly acne scars) and stretch marks, and improves the elasticity of the skin. It can be applied directly to the face, alone or with essential oils added, to promote skin cell regeneration, improve sun-damaged skin, heal acne, and combat aging. It is also applied to the hair and scalp, where it nourishes stressed hair and provides shine while soothing scalp problems. Moroccan woman have been using Argan oil in this way for thousands of years. Argan oil contains more Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) than any other natural oil. This powerful antioxidant neutralizes free radicals that cause cell damage and aging. It is also rich in anti-inflammatory phytosterols and anti-oxidative phenolic compounds. Simplers Argan Oil comes from a women's cooperative in Morocco that provides much-needed jobs for women. To make the best quality oil, the nut must be cracked and shelled by hand. It takes approximately 15 hours of labor to produce one quart of oil. The objectives of the cooperative are to protect the Argan forest through sustainable use, produce a high quality certified organic oil, and improve the economic and social status of rural Moroccan women. Each woman is required to plant at least 10 new trees a year. Below are photos from our visit to the cooperative last June. The third photo includes Elsa, one of the owners of Simplers, trying to crack the nuts. It's not easy! It took us at least 10 minutes to crack just one. The first picture is the Argan tree, a favorite of goats who will do anything to get the nuts. This photo is real! Simplers herbalist, Robin, says “I just add a little rose otto essential oil to it and use it on my face and body every day right after the shower. I've never felt so soft!”
