Hydrosols or Floral Waters are co-created along with essential oils during steam distillation of freshly harvested plants. In fact, the bulk of the total yield of this process is the hydrosol which is rich in water soluble hydrophilic elements of the original plants. These elements, sometimes termed “weak acids”, are present only in the hydrosol and not in the essential oil (oil and water do not mix). The gentleness of these acids and the benevolent nature of the hydrosols offer a myriad of treatment possibilities when a more subtle approach is required. Infants, elders, highly allergic, chronically or terminally ill individuals may better respond to protocols of aromatic hydrosols where dosages of concentrated essential oils would be contraindicated.
